Abstract

5 00 Kegs’ of a line shell sample assaying 53. 08 CaO was received from M/s. The Travancore Electro-chemical Industries Ltd, Kerala for pelletization and calcination studies. Washing of the shells improved the grade to 54. 16 % CaO. Pelletizing with 6% molasses after grinding the shells to 83. 5%,-200 mesh produced the best pellets. Heat hardened pellets at 250°C stood calcination in a rotary kiln very well and retained their shape. Calcined pellets assayed 93, 8% Ca O and thus would satisfy the specifications laid down for the manufacture of calcium carbide.
