Abstract

India's demand of zinc has so far been met entirely by imports and about half of this quantity is consumed by the galvanizing industry. The import figures shown in Fig. clearly indicate that with the accelerated growth of iron and steel industry, the requirement for zinc has almost doubled in the last five years. It is estimated that the requirement of primary zinc metal at the end of 1970 1971 would increase to 2, 25, 00 tonnes. Even though, there are plans to establish an additional zinc smelter industry in India, the production from these plants will hardly meet the projected demand during the 4th Five Year Plan period. The overall shortage of zinc and the drain on the foreign exchange, calls for intensive investigations for substitution and recovery from the waste products.
