Abstract

A Sample of low-grade quartz-sillimanite schist from Sonaphar, Assam, received from the Director of Geology and Mining, Shillong assayed 21.8% AlgO3, 69.2% SiO2, 2.4% Fe2O3, 0.8% TiO2 0,4% CaO, 0.14% MgO and 0.70%(Na2O K2O). Quartz followed by muscovite and rutile were the principal gangue minerals. Sillimanite grains were intimately associated as inclusions in quartz and were fairly 1iberated only at 8 to 25 microns size. Flotation using oleic acid emulsion as a collector for sillimanite and tannin extract as a depressant for quartz at pH 9.5 yielded a concentrate assaying 59.4% Al2O3 but with a low recovery of 23.0% Al2O3
