Abstract

Conventional iron production in a blast furnace is based on the smelting of wholly lumpy or suitably agglomerated burden in optimum proportions whilst employing physically strong and good metallurgical grade coke. India has more or less uniformly dispersed deposits of high grade iron ores in the country. Conservative estimates of coal reserves in India exceed 20,000 million tones of which hardly 1500 million tones are expected to be of good metallurgical grade coal. Deposits of good metallurgical grade coal are located over a small geographical belt on the Bengal-Bihar State borders in India. As such, iron smelting plants in different parts of India utilizing regional iron ores and non-metallurgical coals present attractive possibilities thereby eliminating the expensive and over-congested rail transport of foundry grades pig iron all over the country to meet the ever multiplying demands of the Indian foundry industry. This Feasibility Project Report has been prepared for the production of foundry grades of pig iron employing low temperature carbonized coke made from non-coking coals, such as from Singareni coals in Andhra Pradesh for the smelting of regional iron ore deposits in the country, such as Andhra Pradesh. Whilst this Feasibility Project Report is related specifically to the raw materials of Andhra Pradesh, it can however, with advantages cover smelting of foundry grades of pig iron from other Indian iron ores using low temperature carbonized coke made from various non-coking coal deposits located in different parts of the country. This Feasibility Project will however, not deal with the Project details relating to the production of low temperature carbonized coke from non-coking coals itself which has been dealt with elsewhere.
