Abstract
The paper gives a review of the results obtained at the National Metallurgical Laboratory on the electrolytic production of high purity manganese metal and manganese dioxide. The paper has been divided into two distinct sections: (i)Electrolytic production of the metal or the dioxide and (ii)the regeneration of the spent liquid from the electrolytic cell. The electrolytic bath contains manganese sulphate and requisite amount of Sulphuric acid. The bath for the production of the metal contains, in addition to the above, ammonium sulphate for the production of the manganese metal and the dioxide have been given. The various processes in practice for the regeneration of the spent liquid have been made about the use of ignited manganese sulphate and also about the reduction of the ore by various organic materials for the utilistation of low grade manganese ore with varying phosphorous contents has also been indicated.
