Abstract

A mineralogical study has been carried out to assess the suitability of serpentine and saxonite from Bihar for the manufacture of forsterite refractories. The effect of elevated temperatures on the mineralogical constitution of those materials, with and without the addition of magnesite, has been studied. The optimum magnesite additions for conversion of the materials to forsterite and appropriate firing temperature have been determined. The influence of the mineralogical composition on the refractory is discussed.
