Abstract

The general property requirements of materials for the stress-carrying insert in pre-stressed concrete are briefly reviewed and an appreciation made of the degree to which various steels in the as-rolled, cold-drawn or heat-treated conditions meet the demands of the different systems of pre-stressed concrete construction .Special attention is given to the creep or stress-relaxation problem as it concerns stressing inserts, and the view is reached that the significance of this problem has been over-emphasized by previous writers. Finally, consideration is given to the production in India of suitable steels.
