Abstract

The Silica sand sample MSS-1 was received from the Director of Geology and Mining, Government of Maharashtra Nagpur to study its suitability as a foundry moulding sand. The sand deposit is located at Phondaghat in Kankavali Mahal, Ratnagiri, Maharashtra State. It occurs as sedimentary sand stone bed belonging to Kaladgi series (Cuddapah system). The sand was obtained by crushing the bigger lumps into about size pieces and finally powdering in the mortars. As received the sand sample was coarse to fine grained and reddish in colour.
