Abstract

History of Case: with a view to utilize tertiary Assam coal containing about 8% ash and 3 to 4 % sulphur, possessing fairly good coking properties, the Deputy Coal Controller (Prod.), Ministry of Steel and Mines, Department of Mines and Metals had desired an investigation in the low Shaft Furnace Pilot Plant of the National Metallurgical Laboratory to assess the suitability of a coke for iron smelting. Made out of a blended coal mix containing 20% of the Assam coal. In view of the limited reserves of coking coal in India and particularly in view of their high ash contents, optimum blending of Assam coal with other coals occurring will not only reduce the load on coking coals occurring in the Bengal-Bihar belt but also will offer scope for utilization of Assam coal. It was understood that coke from blended coal mixture had been made at the Durgapur Coke Ovens Plant of West Bengal Government employing 20% Assam Coal in the coal blend, the balance being normal coking coal.
