Abstract

Conventional smelting of pig iron in a big blast furnace is based on the use of lumpy iron ore or agglomerated iron ore fines by sintering or pelletizing with abrasion-resistant hard metallurgical coke along with limestone or dolomitic limestone as the flux. The combustion of coke to carbon monoxide in the tuyeres area and the introduction of preheated air blast supply the physical and metallurgical heat requirements of iron smelting. Almost the entire world’s production of pig iron is obtained from blast furnaces which is considered to be the most efficient and economical method of iron production. With the availability of suitable raw-materials of requisite grades for iron-smelting in a blast furnace and with increasing applications of various modern techniques, supremacy of a blast furnace for iron smelting cannot be challenged. Difficulty, however, arises when raw-materials of suitable grades are not available.
