Abstract

The effect of aluminium on the isothermal transformation characteristics and Martensite transformation range of eutectoid steels have been determined. Aluminium does not materially alter the shape of the TTT diagram. In detail aluminium decreases somewhat the incubation period and accelerates the transformation of austenite to pearlite, but had the opposite effects on the austenite-bainite transformation. A modified metallographic technique was employed to locate the Ms temperature of medium carbon steels. In steels containing 0.40 and 0.80% carbon, addition of aluminium has been confirmed to raise the Ms temperature and the effect shown to be more pronounced than formation.
