Abstract

Graphite crucibles are widely used in India for melting brass and other non-ferrous alloys. They are also used to a small extent for gold melting. The present position of the Indian Graphite Crucible Industry is briefly reviewed. The causes for the poor services life of the Indian crucibles as compared to that of imported ones has been discussed in detail. The need for a systematic study of the problems facing crucible manufacture in India is stressed upon. The research work under progress on the graphite crucible project undertaken by the refractories Division of the National Metallurgical Laboratory, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Jamshedpur, is briefly described.
