Abstract

Pilot Plant studies on beneficiation and sintering characteristics of a sample of massive iron ore received from Dalli Mines of Hindustan Steel Limited, the Bhilai Steel project was undertaken in the National Metallurgical Laboratory and the results are presented in this Report. The sample was of a good grade, high in iron (66% Fe) and low in insoluble content (4.4%)and could be used as such in the blast furnace for iron smelting. By wet screening, it was possible to bring down the insoluble content to 2.8% in the +1/2" fraction with rejection of 17.0% silica and 8.4% Alumina in the slimes for an iron loss of only 2.7%. The -1/2" fines constituting 21.4% by weight, could be sintered without any further beneficiation. Good quality sinters having basicity ratios (CaO + MgO/SiO2+Al2O3) upto 2.4, could be produced.
