Abstract

The Madras Government recently approached the National Metallurgical Laboratory to undertaken a study of the hematite content in their Kanjamalai magnetite ore deposit near Salem, Madras. The problem was suggested by M/s. M.N.Dastur & Co. Pte.Ltd, who, in the course of their data evaluation in connection with the project Report for the setting up of an Iron & Steel Plant in the Salem district, came across inconsistent iron recoveries reported during beneficiation tests conducted on samples collected from different zones of the iron ore deposit . The Iron recoveries differed with variations in the hematite content which was reported in the non-magnetic fraction during magnetic separation. It was, therefore felt that determination of the extent of hematite formation in the ore body will be helpful in planning the ore concentration processes for producing concentrates for the Salem Steel plant.
