Abstract

Variations in compositions of a melt influence the nucleation and growth rate of eutectic cells affecting thereby the eutectic cell size. Cell size has been shown to influence tensile strength of the alloy. A study has been made in this paper on the eutectic cell size formed by the addition of various elements to cast iron, it has been observed that an element in the same corporation behave differently. Cooling curves of the above melts were investigated and it was noted that longer the time taken for the eutectic arrest in the solidification curve, the larger was the size of the eutectic cells obtained.
