Abstract

A method for recovery of nickel oxide from silver refinery waste liquid having the composition nickel sulphate - 2 gm, zinc sulphate - 2 gm sulphuric acid - 3.6 gm in an aqueous solution of 100 ml has been developed. The method consists in adding the neutral solution of the above mixture (neutralized by caustic soda) to a sodium hypochlorite solution containing an excess of sodium hydroxide with a constant stirring when nickelic oxide is precipitated and a soluble sodium zincate is formed. The filtrate contains almost all the amount of zinc free from nickel and the residue is nickelic oxide to the extent of Ni : Zn = 95:5.
