Abstract

Studies were undertaken in the National Metallurgical Laboratory on the beneficiation of 6 iron ore samples from Noamundi and Joda and 2 samples from the Noamundi Washing Plant. Washing the ore at -2" size yielded a clean and sized product free from adhered fines and also a properly classified -3/8' material. The iron content improved by 0.7 to 6.6% in the washed product. Washing of the ore samples followed by heavy media separation rejected the bulk of the laterite and shaly material in the float thereby reducing the alumina content in the ore. The grade improved by 2.8 to 8.1 units and final concentrate assayed over 61% Fe with maximum insoluble content of of 5.8%. The iron recoveries varied between 63.8 to 87.1%.Beneficiation of the washery samples also produced good grade concentrates suitable for the sinter plant, though iron recoveries were somewhat low.
