Abstract
A survey of Indian steel-making practices by the director has revealed the following facts: (i) Indian steel-making facilities produce considerably less steel than their theoretical capacity would predict,(ii) a variety of ill-defined difficulties are encountered which account for all or part of low production,(iii) all organizations of steel users complain about the poor quality of the steel, and particularly its lack of cleanliness. The Government of India now intends to build two new plants. It has employed three groups of consultants for and facilities, the recommendations of the consultants differs considerably The scrap situation in India is tight and apparently difficult to control. Wherever this is the case, a steel-making practice in which a widely varying amount of scrap is used, without excessive investment in equipment, should be the ideal solution. For the production of other steel, the open-hearth practice and electric furnaces should be used.
