Abstract

Production of high purity manganese dioxide for battery and other purpose is of interest to India with her vast manganese deposits. It can be produced by heating the oxide, carbonate or bicarbonate of manganese with or without alkalies as catalysts to high temperature in oxidising atmosphere; it can also be produced by oxidising Mn++ ions. Product from chemical method is not always free from objectionable substances and sufficiently rich in MnO2. Anodic oxidation of maganous sulphate and nitrate solution between platinum, lead and graphite electrodes under 2.5 to 4.5 volts and C.D’s of 0.005-1.0 amp/cm2 furnishes high purity manganese dioxide.National Metallurgical Laboratory carries on investigations on this subject to work out a method for large-scale production. Qualities required in manganese dioxide to suit battery manufacture need investigation.
