Abstract

Diagrams to represent the metal-sulphur-oxygen systems have been derived from thermodynamic data. These diagrams have several advantages over the Predominance Area Diagrams (P.A.D.) in controlling roasting operations. The P.A.D.'s can predict the condensed phases from a knowledge of the equilibrium gas composition whereas the present diagrams can predict these from a knowledge of the initial state of the system. The present diagrams can make quantitative predictions on the relative masses of the different condensed phases obtainable in operation, which is not possible with the P.A.D.'s. A new procedure has been developed to predict the equilibrium phases when more than one metallic element is present in the system.
