Abstract

The Subject of corrosion in Brine Storage Tanks was refereed to far investigation by Messrs. The D.C.M. Chemical Works to the National Metallurgical Laboratory. The brine tanks used for feeding saturated sodium chloride electrolyte to the caustic soda cell were found to fail prematuredly by pitting. The corrosion attack was most severe in the intermittently exposed areas originating from the rising and falling of the level of the feed solution. Before taking up this investigation, a visit was made to the plant to study site conditions that had caused the corrosion. A detailed plan of investigation was drawn up to study the effects of various factors responsible for the type of corrosion attack observed and to suggest possible remedial measures.
