Abstract

Banerjee established for the first time that the composition of a binary alloy deposited from an electrolyte of which the concentration remains essentially unchanged during the period of electrolysis is determined by the Cathode Potential and if the latter is kept constant, remains unaffected by the duration of electrolysis. Applying the above method, Cole and O'Neill deposited copper-zinc alloys over a wide range of composition. The existence of the metastable phases in electrolytic alloys and their subsequent transformation as observed by the authors has been successfully explained on the basis of the postulations advanced by Banerjee and Allmand.
