Abstract

The uses of magnesium metal and multitude magnesium based alloys both in time of war and peace makers them of highly strategic importance. As such the establishment of indigenous magnesium production on industrial scale has received top priority in all parts of the World –this is the position which India is now confronted in the production of magnesium on an industrials scale from indigenous raw materials. The low density of magnesium combined with its good machinability, damping capacity, rigidity without weight penalty, wearing qualities, heat and electrical conductivity and chemical resistance makes it eminently suitable for its multifarious applications. It can be subjected to sand or die-casting, rolling, simple or impact extrusion, forging, drawing, spinning, joining by welding, brazing, bolting or revetting and other standard processes necessary for an excellent engineering metal, apart from its applications in times of conflict.
