Abstract

Theoretical basis of hot strength of bentonites with special reference to Na and Ca montmorillonites has been reviewed. A study has been made of the hot strength characteristics of three indigenous Bentonites viz. Cutch (Gujarat), Bakudi (Bihar) and Sorara (Kashmir).Cutch bentonite was predominantly of sodium base whereas both Bakudi and Sorara were of non-sodium type. The hot strength developed with Cutch bentonite bonded mixtures were the highest. Bakudi bentonite imparted very low hot strength and the high hot strength developed with Sorara was probably due to the halloysite contaminations.
