Abstract

This paper gives the results of an investigation on the composition of granular ceramic powders under pressure applied from one end. Bulk densities of these powders increase with pressure according to the relationship BD=P/a+bp+c, where BD is bulk density, P-applied pressure and ‘a’ ‘b’ and ‘c’ are constant. Analyses of the data on the analogy of a first order chemical reaction indicate that compaction occurs by two simultaneously operating mechanisms. It is suggested that these mechanism may be (i) Compaction by sliding of particles and (ii) Compaction by the production of fines by crushing which enter into available voids, The effect of the binding agents like sulphite-lye etc., is one of lubrication, which do not a pear to alter the trend of compaction.
