Abstract
In view of the prevailing shortage of the different grades of foundry pig irons in this country, it was decided to investigate, whether Indian foundries could use basic iron and siliconize it to the desired silicon content in a cupola melt by the addition of ferro-silicon. The work was sponsored by the Hindustan Steel Ltd., with a view to study the economic and metallurgical feasibility of Siliconization based on the loss of heat on silicon additions, silicon recovery and effects of other elements attendant on Siliconization of the metal etc.
