Abstract

Beneficiation of a sample of low-grade manganese ore fines produced in the manganese mines of Shivrajpur Syndicate Ltd., Bombay has been studies by jigging, tabling, magnetic separation and flotation. The sample assayed 36.5 percent Mn, 10.25 percent Fe, 6.94 percent Al2O3, 19.07 percent SiO2 and 0.38 percent P. Of the various methods studies, jigging of the coarse fraction of the ore and tabling of the fine size recover 75.4 percent manganese in a concentrate which on sintering analyses 51.0 percent manganese, and 0.31 percent phosphorus which is high for metallurgical purposes. Magnetic separation and flotation reduce the phosphorous content of the concentrate only to 0.26 percent. The product could therefore best be used by blending with low-phosphorous materials for making ferro-manganese.
