Abstract

During the commissioning of the steel melt shop at Salem steel plant, SAIL, Argon Oxygen Decarburizer convertor process was studied in detail. The melting practice of stainless steel in AOD was observed and carbon removal at various stages of blowing was focussed on. Carbon removal efficiency of AOD was determined using an empirical relation. The influence of some process parameters with carbon removal efficiency has also been discussed in this paper. Since, the efficiency of desulphurisation during reduction period has to be ensured, slag analysis also has been done and the effect of process parameters on desulphurisation has also been discussed in this paper. This paper also deals with the prediction of inclusion which is expected to be present in stainless steel using ternary phase diagram.
