Abstract

The present work confers to the fabrication and characterization of two Mg-alloys (Mg-8%Sn and Mg-8%Sn-3%Al-1%Si (TAS831)). SiC particulates having average particle size of 25-125 µm were introduced as the reinforcement in Mg-8%Sn and TAS831. Castings of both Mg-8%Sn and TAS831 alloys composite (base alloy reinforced with silicon carbide particulates) were produced using stir casting technique. A thorough investigation was carried out by metallography, hardness measurement, and X-ray diffraction technique. SiC particulates were uniformly distributed throughout the matrix. The hardness values of the composites material increases significantly as compared to the unreinforced counterpart.
