Abstract

The effect of Residual stresses induced by Surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) on Fatigue crack growth rate of AISI 304LN Stainless steel Compact specimens was studied. SMAT induced Compressive residual stresses, increased the surface and sub-surface hardness, increased the surface roughness. Microstructure and morphology of the treated surfaces were studied to correlate these with different specimens with different exposure time with their fatigue crack growth rates.
