Abstract

Rail steels are imposed with stringent quality requirements in the specifications considering their criticality of application. As stipulated in the standard [IRS-T-12:2009], rail needs to fulfill the qualifying criteria test requirements for fracture toughness(KIc), fatigue, and residual stress.In this study, an effort is made to establish the role of non-metallic inclusions on the fracture toughness value of rail steel. KIc value was correlated with several parameters like chemistry, inclusion rating and mechanical properties. Samples with high level of non metallic inclusions (MnS and Silicates) showed lowest fracture toughness. Highest KIc value was obtained in sample with lowest hydrogen content. Fracture toughness tests were carried out using SENB [single edge notch bend] specimens, in MTS 810, a servo hydraulic test system
