Abstract

At RSB transmissions, the general practice of testing the soundness of rear housing components is magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI). After being checked by MPI, all sound components are coated and then delivered to the customer mainly M/S Tata Motors, Jamshedpur. Unfortunately 200 rear housing components were coated without tested by MPI and one such component failed at the customer end. There was an urgent need by RSB Transmissions to check the soundness of all 200 components by ultrasonic technique and to have expert comments on their soundness. Client approached scientists of NML for the expert comments on the test results as done by third party. Based on the analysis by NML scientist, 20% of components were found to be defective and rejected. Rest all were certified as sound components.
