Abstract

The thermo-chemistry of the process of production of ferro-chromium at the plant of Rohit Ferro-Tech Ltd. At Bistupur, West Bengal was analysed. The thermo-chemical model developed for representing the process was consi-stent with observations in the plant. Based on the model it was recommended that in order to optimise the specific power consumption in the production of ferro-chromium the following strategies must be adopted : (1) Redistribution of quartzite over the charge bed in order to minimize the reduction of SiO2 (2)Optimisation of the composition of the slag to optimize the liquidus temperature of the slag (3)Optimisation of the composition of the slag to minimize the loss of Cr2O3 in the slag.
