Abstract

The formation and nucleation mechanism of deformation-induced martensite (DIM)during strain controlled low cycle fatigue (LCF) deformation of an austenitic stainless steel was investigated at various strain-amplitudes at room temperature in air. A few interrupted LCF tests were also carried out to investigate the evolution of DIM at strain amplitudes of +_ 0.50%. Quantification of DIM was done through electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) tech-nique. It was found that when the strain amplitude is increased, DIM volume fraction increased.
