Abstract

The two stable oxidation states of chromium are +3 and +6 respectively. In nature, chromium occurs in its triv-alent state mainly as chromite and the hexavalent form is seldom found. Pure chromite (FeCr2O4) has a normal spinel structure (AB2O4)where CR is exclusively trivalent and occupies the octahedral sites whereas the iron is divalent and occupies the tetrahedral sites in a closed pack cubic lattice of oxygen.
