Abstract
Gas turbine blades work in high temperature and hot corrosion atmospheres, because of which, they are generally coated or surface treated by thermal barrier coating systems in order to protect against high tempe-rature oxidation and corrosion. Prolonged service expo-sure of the blade material and the coating material will generally lead to certain changes in the microstructure which are deleterious for further continuation of the blade in the service. Service exposures lead to micro-structural degradation/changes that can be classified in two categories.
