Abstract

The failure of bolt during landing is due to unidirect-ional bending fatigue under low nominal stress with mild stress concentration while the failure during torque application is also due to similar mechanism but under high niminal stress. The fracture of both the failed bolts did not occur at the threaded portion indicating absence of any design deficiencies. The composition of Russian bolt is as per the Russian high strength low alloy steel 40KhNMA whereas the other four indigenous bolts has composition close to an equivalent specification EN-24 with insignificant deviations.
