Abstract

The loading fixture for mixed mode I/II fracture toughness testing proposed by Richard, H. A. and Benitz, K. is developed in-house and its design is critically analysed by analytical, simulation and experimental studies. Calculation of reducing maximum resultant shear load of bolts towards Mode II due to moment, identification of critically stressed areas by a FEM based model using ABAQUS/CAE 6.7.5® software, increasing applied load towards Mode II by load vs load line displacement curve and the increasing domination of shear strains towards Mode II in the path of the crack are reported, validating the design.
