Abstract

The present invention relates to a method and system for surface and sub-surface crack detection and finding optimal grinding condition of high speed steel (HSS) rolls. The method comprises surface wave ultrasonic probe of frequency 0.5 MHz, excited by a 400 V peak to peak pulse and acquiring receive energy from half the circumference (BW) of the roll of diameter ranging from 700 mm to 1200 mm. Calibration curves with crack depth and crack echo amplitude and crack depth and BW echo amplitude is developed for the HSS Roll with fixed Gain and fixed Distance. The present invention will be useful for any steel industries, manufacturers as well as users of HSS Rolls to detect the existence of fine fire cracks on the surface and also to optimise the grinding level.
