Abstract

A two dimenstional mathematical model is developed to predict the thermal field in an ESR ingot at any time during its controlled cooling. An indirect way is approached to validate the model which conforms to the available literature reasonably well. The influences of radiative heat transfer factor and convective heat transfer coefficient are also determined in the range of temperature of this study. The estimated controlled coo-ling time is found out to be at least 6 hours when the ingot (1500 mm diameter, 3500 mm long) is kept in a furance at 600°C. The model can also be modified to determine the total heating time required before forging and to verify the origin of cracks in an ESR ingot.
