Abstract
A complex nickel-free creep resistant austenitic steel based on Cr-Mn-N-C system has been developed at the NML to offer a superior alternative to the conventionally used austenitic steels. Its creep properties are superior to those of AISI-316 and 21-4N steels and also comparable to Esshete-1250. This paper presents a comparative study on the metallurgical properties of these steels. The feasibility of commercial production has been broadly demonstrated. The paper also describes the results of product development studies concerning its possible use in exhaust valves of diesel engines.
