Abstract

Indian blast furnaces are charactersied by low produc-tivity and high coke rate as compared to those abroad. In this period of increasing demand for the production of pig iron, use of suitable sized ore, higher percent- age of sinters in the burden etc can improve the produc-tivity to a greater extent. However, in order to incr- ease the productivity, characterisation of iron bearing materials in respect of different physico-chemical properties i s necessary as this can help in having in prior knowledge about the iron bearing materials before being used in the blast furnace. More emphasis is paid to high temperature studio like reductibility. RDI, softening melting charactersitics which indicate the behaviour of the burden at the stock-bosh interface.
