Abstract

19 million tons steel in fourth Five Year Plan -- The Union Cabinet is understood to have decided in principle to plan for a steel production target of 18 to 19 million tons in the Fourth Plan. The decision is based on the recommendation of the steel steering group set up by the Ministry of Steel and Heavy Industries. It is understood that expansion in both public and private sectors is envi-saged but emphasis is to be on the accelerated expansion of the public sector. The existing public sector plants at Bhilai, Rourkela and Durgapur, which are being expanded in the current Plan, will be further expanded in the Fourth Plan. The Bokaro Plant is not expected to be commissioned in the Third Plan. It will start production in the Fourth Plan period, and attain a capacity of 3 million tons. Besides, there will be a fifth public sector plant.
