Abstract

The paper describes in brief the main trends in the mechanization and automation of rolling mills in the USSR. A bried description of modern roughing, structure, sheet and tube rolling mills is given. It is indicated that the application of installations for a continuous casting of steel in one run with billet and section mills can produce a considerable economy. The paper also furnishes the example of utilization of new technological processes of cross-spiral rolling for manufacturing periodical profiles and parts for machine building (balls, gears, bushings, screws of jacks, grilled tubes and staggered shafts, etc.) which are recently developed in the Soviet Union.
