Abstract
Since iron forms the commonest structural material wide variety of coatings are used for its protection against corrosion & in the realm of organic coatings both natural and synthetic resins are used in coating formulations. With advancement of research in polymers for protection and the demands on coating performance under different environ-mental conditions , a variety of formulations and coating techniques are adopted to suit specific requirements and performence criteria . In this paper basic considerations of protection of iron and steel by organic coatings is dealt in detail along with the criteria of selection of specific coating materials for different end uses . The work carried at the The National Metallurgical Laboratory on Vinyl coatings and Zinc rich primers is briefly disc-ussed.
