Abstract

The objective of the present investigation was to under-stand the problems associated with the production of superfluxed sinter (CaO/SiO2 as high as 3.25) and find out the solution. Laboratory experiments have been carried out to study the sintering behaviour of typical iron ore fines from the captive mines of Bhil.ai Steel Plant (BSI'), India using factorial design of experiments. It has been shown that the sintering indices are markedly influenced by the efficiency of the sintering process and subsequent cooling of sinter. When sintering the mix consisting of too much fine in it, the bed temperature profile broadens. The poor heat transfer and consequently poor sintering efficiency have been explained by a prop-osed scheme which describes the cementing behaviour of the finer flux particles. This is substantiated by the mineralogical evidences. Multiple linear regression equations are presented which relate the response variables to the process para-meters. A regime has been recommended for improvement in the sintering indices and reduction in the specific cons- umption of coke breeze through the use of optimum combi-nation of the process parameters.
