Abstract
Precise definitions of the terms 'phase' and 'component' are essential for a successful application of the Phase Rule. Efforts are continuing to define these terms precisely. The current definitions of these terms are not derived from the laws of thermodynamics. The present communication derives these terms from the laws of thermodynamics. To accomplish this, the term 'entity' and a concept called 'communication' are introduced. The terms 'primary' and 'secondary' units of matter are used in the place of the term 'component'.
