Abstract

The stretch zone ahead of a crack tip in a ductile material governs its fracture toughness. A unique stereological procedure is suggested in this report to determine the nature of the stretch zone by measurement of its height and width. This procedure does not pre-assume the shape of the stretch zone as has been done in the ASTM standard E813, and is capable of explaining J integral fracture toughness in a generalized way. A series of seterological measurements of the nature of stretch zones in two micro-alloyed steels illustrate the potential of the suggested technique.
