Abstract

The place of Defence Research Laboratories in the field of applied secondary metallurgy in Australia is unique in that it is the only large independent laboratory engaged in this type of work and, as such, has gained much exper-ience in this broad field, especially during and pinces World War II. This is particularly so in that aspect of the work dealing with investigation and elucidation of causes of service failure of engineering components, for it has long been recognised that only by thorough invest-igation and understanding of causes underlying failure can real progress be made in the related fields of design and engineering materials.
