Abstract
The conventional gun melt quenching technique was slightly modified to facilitate rapid solidification of highly reactive alloys like Cu-Mg. This involved the use of molten salt flux for melting mid quenching the alloy. The cooling rate achieved was estimated to be in the range of 10(5) - 10(6) K/s. A Cu-28 at% Mg alloy was successfully melt-quenched by this method. The melt-quenched foils had a lustrous golden yellow colour. Formation of metastable tetragonal and amorphous phases was determined by XRD and TEM.
